South Africa’s only father-and-son Heart Transplant Team

Drs Willie and Johan Koen, a unique father-son duo of cardiac surgeons at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town, have been making headlines for their extraordinary partnership in performing heart transplants and advancing cardiac care in South Africa.

Dr Willie Koen, trained by the legendary Professor Christiaan Barnard, is one of the country’s most experienced cardiac surgeons. He performed South Africa’s first mechanical heart transplant in 1998 and has dedicated decades to saving lives through transplants and pioneering mechanical circulatory support. His son, Dr Johan Koen, a cardiothoracic, heart transplant, and mechanical circulatory support specialist, returned from advanced training at Toronto’s elite cardiac centres to join him. Together, they form South Africa’s only known father-son team operating side by side in the theatre.

Recent media coverage celebrates this special partnership and their shared commitment to tackling cardiovascular disease, South Africa’s leading cause of death.
