About us

The Cape Town Heart and Lung Transplant Program was established more than 30 years ago and has performed more than 300 transplants.

Doctor Willie Koen, the program’s director, performed Africa’s first mechanical heart implantation in Cape Town in 2000. Subsequently, the program has performed over 100 Mechanical heart implantations. It is the largest program of its kind in Africa.

The program’s multidisciplinary and internationally trained experts addresses the rising burden of end-stage heart and lung diseases through innovative techniques and compassionate care.
