Transplant and LVAD Support Group Meeting – May 2026
Heart Transplant and LVAD Support Group Meeting: 26 May 2026
On Tuesday evening, 26th May 2026, patients, family members, caregivers, and members of the Heart Transplant and LVAD Team gathered at Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital for our latest Support Group meeting.
The evening began with a welcome from the transplant team psychologist, Yvonne, who highlighted the importance of support groups in bringing together patients at different stages of their journeys. The meeting was well attended and included individuals awaiting transplantation, heart transplant recipients, LVAD recipients, family members, and supporters.
In her opening remarks, Yvonne reflected on the recent storms and flooding experienced across the Western Cape, drawing a parallel between these natural challenges and the personal storms that many patients and families face during the journey of advanced heart failure, transplantation, and recovery. While storms can leave devastation behind, they also remind us of the remarkable resilience of the human spirit.
She acknowledged the courage demonstrated by patients and their loved ones who have endured uncertainty, lengthy hospital admissions, major surgeries, setbacks, and ongoing recovery challenges. Emphasising the importance of hope, she reminded attendees that support, connection, and shared experiences often help carry people through some of life’s most difficult moments.
A special highlight of the evening was a heartfelt and deeply personal presentation by recent heart transplant recipient Prudence Louw, who generously shared her journey with the group. Her story offered inspiration, encouragement, and a powerful reminder that difficult circumstances are not always a person’s final destination. For many attendees, particularly those still awaiting transplantation, her experiences served as a source of hope and reassurance.
As always, the second half of the evening provided an opportunity for questions, discussion, and mutual support. Patients and family members were encouraged to share their experiences, challenges, successes, and concerns in a safe and supportive environment. These conversations continue to be one of the most valuable aspects of our support group meetings, fostering connection, understanding, and encouragement among those walking similar paths.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to another meaningful evening of learning, support, and hope.
